Niklas’ musical ideas have crystalized and become cogent through a combination of extensive live performance - playing over 100 shows in the last two years - and experimentation in his Berlin Studio. Written between 2018 and 2019, his second album ‘Svalbard’ will be released in February 2020 via 7K!. Niklas’ use of the piano; electronics (synth and computer) and his Grandfather’s piano accordion allow him to communicate via a number of musical traditions and languages.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThis versatility has allowed him to work on a variety of projects ranging from an inspired reinterpretation of Bach’s Preludes in C Minor (“Blooming”), to well received remixes for pop artists such as RY X and Asgeir. The islands are isolated and their relatively rapid changing landscapes, display immediate and visible effects of climate change. These thoughts weigh heavily in the heart and mind of the\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e25 year-old artist, whose process was enriched by the environment which he chose to write in. Niklas was at once ensconced within the dark azure palette of winter - a piano waited for him and he brought Grandfather’s Accordion and a new Electric Harmonium along with a small number of other instruments. Once Niklas had finished writing, he took these compositions to Andy Barlow of Lamb (U2, Fink and Willie Nelson). In Brighton they worked together and Andy recorded, produced and mixed ‘Svalbard’ it into its final state. ‘Svalbard’ opens with “If”, a song which articulates the traces which these environments have left in Niklas’ mind - something pressing is present in the music. All these impressions come from a piece of music which is both melancholic and positive, something which can cradles us from anxiety. ‘Svalbard’ balances a turbulent outlook with peaceful embraces. Basta positions softness beside sharpness, fragility beside resilience, exploring the poetic dualities of lullament: the evocative coming together of lullaby and lament. She captures the sensations of being held and suffocated, finding comfort and grief overlapping in inseparable ways. Heard clearest on “Hands Want To” and “You, My Nest”, these songs soothe and mourn in the same breath, offering the listener safety but hinting at danger. Throughout the album, contradictory textures converge, whispery vocals and classical instrumentation are pierced by sharp, metallic interruptions, expressing gentleness within the clamour and strength in vulnerability. These contradictions fuel the emotional engine of the record.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWinged in Collapse breathes with Basta’s classical musical training, chamber-inspired instrumentation that flirts with delicate pop elements. Basta pulls on influences from shoegaze to baroque\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eornamentation “Sob and Moan” collides this old and new by intertwining harpsichord with Babyxsosa-inspired autotuned vocals. “Laid”, featuring medievalcore-folk duo LEYA, leans into an uneasy, ancient landscape as LEYA’s hymnal vocals glide over discordant strings.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBasta’s collaborators bring personal offerings to Winged in Collapse; on “2674”, Prestonian artist Rainy Miller’s poem is a meditation on peace and loss, softly cooed over fleeting flashes of rhythmic light. Swedish sound artist Felisha Ledesma’s contribution to “Guidelines” cuts the heavy tension with a beam of midsummer sunlight. She recounts blurry memories of hot, heady afternoons; no details are certain, but the vision is warm and organic. The album’s closing track, “Say it Closely”, lifts the album out of the dark, a hopeful glimmer of light. james K’s sweet, Elizabeth Fraser-inspired vocals sigh over crunching footsteps.
